Foreign Hackers Putting UK Firms Out Of Business: The Daily Telegraph

On October 24th, 2011, Con Coughlin reported for The Daily Telegraph on how hacking by foreign governments and corporations is putting British companies out of business. Citing remarks from Maj Gen Jonathan Shaw, the head of the British Ministry of Defence's cyber security program, the article notes that British firms routinely have valuable commercial information stolen from them by overseas rivals.  These firms then go bankrupt after their blueprints are used to produce a much cheaper version of their product.  Interestingly, Gen. Shaw didn't see cyberattacks as a military threat, but more of an economic threat; Gen. Shaw believes that cyberattacks will cause Britain to lose its position as one of the world’s leading hi-tech manufacturers.

Gen. Shaw also believes that the Chinese pose the biggest threat to British interests because they regularly target British government institutions and companies to gather information.  “If the moment you come up with a brilliant new idea, it gets nicked by the Chinese, then you can end up with your company going bust”, he said.  As for China, Britain (and perhaps the United States) should take a few hints: the Chinese government has introduced a program that trains businesses on how to protect themselves from cyber attacks.  “Anyone can take part in these courses and learn how to implement effective precautions against cyber attacks,” Gen. Shaw said. “We should do the same here.”
