WashPo’s Capital Business on cybersecurity

On 9/30, The Washington Post ran a bunch of cyber related stories as part of its Capital Business section.  Here’s Dan Beyers’ quick opening note on “why cybersecurity?”  Take a look below . . .

Abha Bhattarai reported for The Washington Post on hacking workshops.  Specifically, The InfoSec Institute puts students through “60 hours of training and countless hours spent hacking into fake computer networks . . . ‘to think like the bad guys.'”  At the end, you receive a certification as a Ethical Hacker.  I don’t know if that’s a real thing, or a paper certificate that you get at the end of the course.  Regardless, InfoSec offers its services to government agencies, financial institutions, and Fortune 500 companies.

Along similar lines, Sarah Halzack reported for The Washington Post on how the demand for cybersecurity professionals has skyrocketed.  According to the article, demand is outpacing supply, causing pay for cybersecurity analysts to rise by 10.1%.

Marjorie Censer reported for The Washington Post on DARPA’s Plan X (awesome name for a development program, right?).  Again, Plan X is a proposed cyberwar battlefield management platform that would utilize “battle units” and “‘high-level mission plans’ that can act as auto-pilot functions.”  Interestingly, Plan X has gotten an “unanticipated and overwhelming response from industry and academia” after DARPA began soliciting ideas.
