On 11/2, Nextgov’s Aliya Sternstein looked at the cyber implications of either Romney’s or Obama’s election. Obviously there’s a bit of guesswork, but here are Sternstein’s thoughts:
If Romney is elected, expect him to “take cues from Senate Republicans” and perhaps put cybersecurity responsibility in the DoD’s hands. Moreover, Romney may look to “invest in aggressive military maneuvers for cyberspace.” Finally, Romney should put Michael Hayden (ex CIA/NSA head) in a cabinet level position.
If Obama is reelected, look for a continuation of the cybersecurity EO effort and more caution when resorting to offensive cyber-operations.
Sternstein believes that both candidates will upgrade CyberComm to full combatant command status.
