To thwart hackers, firms salting their servers with fake data: WashPo

Ellen Nakashima, for The Washington Post, on how the private sector is increasingly turning to honeypots to combat cyberexpolitation.  Nakashima recounted how a printing company planted fake data on its servers “to lure hackers into ‘rabbit holes’ in the hopes of frustrating them into giving up.”  Beyond possibly confusing the hackers with fake information, honeypots also allow computer security experts to monitor hackers’ habits.  Private sector active defense is of uncertain legality (at least the hackback/counterstriking portion of it), but Nakashima writes that honeypots located on a company’s servers are probably legal so long as the fake data “[does] not damage a third party’s computer system.”  Be sure to check out the rest of the WashPo article.
