U.S. and China Put Focus on Cybersecurity: NYT

Jane Perlez had a solid article for The New York Times on Gen. Dempsey’s (Chairman of the JCS) meetings with his Chinese counterpart, General Fang.  The article touched on cyber, but took a closer look at the Obama administration’s pivot towards Asia.  This quote from Fang indicates China’s ambition: “The Pacific Ocean is wide enough to accommodate us both.”

Regarding cybersecurity, Perlez’s article noted that Fang said a major cyberattack “may be as serious as a nuclear bomb” and was willing to set up a “cybersecurity ‘mechanism,’ but warned that progress might not be swift.”

I doubt there’s going to be any meaningful progress on China’s pervasive cyberexploitation, but a hotline for cyberattacks between the U.S. and China would be a good start.

Anna Mulrine had a similar article for the Christian Science Monitor on Gen. Dempsey’s visit to China.
