CrowdStrike, a security startup co-founded by former senior McAfee executives George Kurtz and Dmitri Alperovitch, recently received $30 Million in series B round venture funding to assist the company in its efforts to “stem the draining of U.S. intellectual capital to nation-state enemies,” according to USA Today.
Such crowdsourcing campaigns support recent energies to refocus cyber defense and protection. Instead of frontline defenses, such as increased use of firewalls and antivirus software, companies like CrowdStrike are operating under the assumption that data thieves and cyberspies have already penetrated the networks. Therefore, the most effective option is to find the perpetrators and kick them out of the systems.
As Kurtz says:
In the real world you wouldn’t ask if it’s a 9mm bullet or .45-caliber whizzing by your head. You’d get out of the way and find out who is shooting at you and why.
