Cyber Round Up: China, US Reach Cyber ‘Understanding’, Chinese Military Unit Responsible for ‘Naikon’, Pakistan Government Websites Hacked

  • China and US Reach Cyber ‘Understanding’ (White House):  The White House released a statement on September 25 announcing that President Obama and Chinese President Xi an ‘understanding’ on issues of cyber security in the commercial sector.  According to the statement, both nations agreed to commit to refrain from conducting or knowingly supporting the “misappropriation of intellectual property, including trade secrets or other confidential business information” with the intent to benefit national companies or commercial sectors.  Both countries also affirmed that states and companies should not utilize illegal methods for commercial benefits, according the statement.  The full statement can be found here.
  • Chinese Military Responsible for ‘Naikon’ Attack (InformationWeek):  A new report released by ThreatConnect and Defense Group Inc. identifies Unit 78020 of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army as the group responsible for the Naikon cyber espionage campaign launched against governments and militaries in the Southeast Asia region, according to InformationWeek.  According to the article, the Naikon group was responsible for attacking military, diplomatic, and economic targets in several Southeast Asian nations including Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, and Nepal.  Further, the group attacked the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the UN Development Programme, the article reports.  The full article can be found here.
  • Pakistan Government Websites Hacked (Dataquest):  An Indian hacker group, who call themselves the “Mallu Cyber Soldiers”, has reportedly defaced Pakistan government websites including pakistan.gov.pk, president.gov.pk, presidentofpakistan.gov.pk, railways.gov.pk, and cabinet.gov.pk, reports Dataquest.  According to article, Mallu took responsibility for the acts on its Facebook page, and announced that it had committed the acts in retaliation for the hacks that were carried out against the Kerala Government website.  The full article can be found here.
