Gerry Smith wrote a nice article for The Huffington Post regarding DoD’s efforts to hire vets to fill cybersecurity roles. With the plan to dramatically increase CyberComm still (hopefully) on the horizon, the USG has been scrambling to hire people with an IT background. At the same time, Smith notes that “unemployment among young vets is spiking, especially now with sequestration . . . the unemployment rate for veterans who served in the military since 2001 is about 10 percent.”
Killing two birds with one stone, the USG is looking to fill its IT expert shortfall with veterans because they are comfortable with the military lifestyle and may still possess their security clearances. Combating vet unemployment is a big bonus as well.
