Info Security Magazine reports that Icefog is morphing into a more threatening cyber espionage campaign. “Javafog,” as it has come to be known, exploits Java vulnerabilities while utilizing an Icefog backdoor, allowing small groups of cyber criminals to hijack sensitive documents, such as company plans and account credentials. According to Info Security, “Javafoggers” then use that information to access resources both within and outside the victim’s account.
Previously, Icefog focused its efforts on supply chain attacks. However, now,
the attackers appear to have an interest in a range of sectors . . . [and] [s]ome of the names are big: defense industry contractors such as Lig Nex1 and Selectron Industrial Company, ship-building companies such as DSME Tech, Hanjin Heavy Industries, telecom operators such as Korea Telecom and media companies such as Fuji TV and the Japan-China Economic Association.
