On Dec. 13th, 2011, Siobhan Gorman reported for the Wall Street Journal on US efforts to identify Chinese hackers. The WSJ article has much of the same information as this article, which explained that the majority of China-based hacking is done by 12 hacker groups. However, the WSJ article elaborates on a few points:
- The US is hopefully getting serious with China. The article says that US officials have used this information to "confront China more directly about cyberspying" and "warned China about diplomatic consequences of economic spying."
- The dozen or so hacking groups are tied to either the Chinese People's Liberation Army or various Chinese universities.
- The article notes that the NSA has actually been able to identify specific people engaged in the hacking, seemingly solving the attribution concern.
- Nevertheless, US officials are worried about confronting the Chinese because they hold US debt.
