On March 31st, 2012, Somini Sengupta reported for the New York Times on how the hacker group Anonymous promised to bring down the internet. Anon had threatened to target the DNS system with a massive DDOS attack; essentially, hackers would have swamped the system that gets you to your favorite websites, preventing you from getting to said websites. Anon was supposed to attack on Saturday, but Saturday came and went without a peep.
Anon promises to bring down one of Facebook, Amazon, or the internet every few weeks.
The NYT article noted that something good came out of this. In anticipation of the attack, there was a quiet multimillion-dollar effort to improve the DNS system.
